Today I had a pretty normal day at school. In English we had a quiz and I made a 100%, which I pretty proud of 😉 It was an easy quiz though….
After school I met with my friend Jacob and his sister Gretchen, who is in my debate class. We hung out at school a little and then went to their house to watch a movie. We watched Gardians of the Galaxy, which they said would be the ultimate American experience. We couldn‘t watch the whole movie because a little after seven o‘clock, their mom made us some bacon sandwiches, which was really tasty btw. They have a beautiful house, but I instantly recognized that they are overly religious. The crosses everywhere spread in the living room was a hint, then the prayer before eating and that one of their first questions was what religion I was. But anyway, they are really nice people and real Texans!
Afterwards we went to the High School stadium to „meet the pirates night“, where I met my host family again. It is an evening where everybody gathers at the stadium and they introduce the sport teams (pirates being the members of the football team, or all WHS students in general). The football team was definitely the center of attention. Most sports teams were just mentioned, but the football team was introduced twice, and all the players individually with name, grade and position. The team isn‘t really a good football team but football is huuuuge here, so they‘ll get supported anyway…..
First the band was playing on the field and marching (once also spelling the word „pirate“ with the band members). Since the school mascot is a pirate, they even played the pirates of the caribbean theme. Afterwards the pacesetters went on the field and performed a dance in sparkeling outfits to raise the crowed‘s attention. They covered the role that I expected the cheerleaders to have. But what I have found out so far, is that cheerleaders are not really important in Texan high schools. They are not even on the field performing, they are on the side of the field and only dancing for about one minute. And also, the cheerleading team isn‘t really the popular girls. Nobody even knows who they are. The real stars in school are the football players. And also, band seems like — with almost 300 kids involved — the most important part of a football game. They are quite impressive and I‘m not only saying that because my siblings and a lot of my friends are in it!
After introducing all of the players the evening was practically over and we went home. The goal of this event is to introduce the players and reach a bigger audience every time. So it wasn‘t a game at all…. The real game will be next Thursday!
Today during second period, all the exchange students were called to the principal‘s office to try on different sizes of letter jackets.
This is a letter jacket that looks similar to the one Wylie High School has. In the movies you can mostly see footballers walking around in those jackets. Here they show school pride and students wear them like jewllery.
Students that want a jacket like that, usually have to get a certain amount of credit for it and either be really good at school or a sport. But since we are exchange students, we just get them for free. Or how our principal says; to show them off to our friends. We can also get patches sewed on that show a sport or another extra curricular activity. I want my name on the back of the jacket and a debate patch. Maybe a Texan flag as well.
After returning to my French class, I got called to the counselor‘s office to talk about my school schedule, since I let them know yesterday, that I‘m not happy in AP US History. They could change the AP class to a regular history class immediately, so I went directly to the new class. The teacher for the regular class is a lot nicer and we actually talk about the reasons behind certain historic events. I like this class a lot better than the other one.
At lunch I went across the street to Subway with Sophie and Konstantin, the two German exchange students. The sandwich was pretty great, but the lemonade certainly wasn‘t………
The other classes went quite normal, so there‘s not much to tell about it. After school I went home and chilled most of the time. For dinner we ordered pizza and watched friends on the couch at the same time.
Today was my third day at school. To my surprise, I had my classrooms all memorized already. So I took the bus to school and went to my human geo class. I‘m still surprised how little those kids know about the world. I encountered questions like: „Is Asia a continent?“ and „Is Belgium in Europe?“ XD
French class was exactely like the days before; without French….. Then 3rd period I had history that I‘ll drop tomorrow. We had the quiz and you can‘t belive how easy that was! It was multiple choice and I regret studying for this at all. I‘m still going to drop the class because I don‘t like the teacher.
The fourth period was debate and we just watched videos of the different categories of debate that the school offers. But this class was actually a little uncomfortable… Maybe you can remember that after the first day of school I said that I had made 3 new friends. One of them, a guy from debate, was hitting on me the whole weekend via SnapChat. And on Sunday I texted Michelle from my debate class and asked her for advice. She said she‘d talk to him for me, which I‘m really thankful for <3 So today he didn‘t speak a word to me in class. But it ended well; after school he texted me that we could still be friends and that there should be nothing awkward between us.
After debate I met with Jacob, a senior that‘s a friend of my host brother Luis. Since Jacob has his own car, we went to Whataburger that‘s about 10 minutes away from school. The whole lunch break wasn‘t really long though, so we had to kind of hurry. What‘s really cool is that he‘s really into music, and he‘ll give me some music sheets tomorrow, so I can play them on the piano. Anyway, since we are allowed to eat in class, I took my cup of tea to the next class.
In environmental science I made a few new friends; Maddy, Kaylie and Kasie. They were all really nice and suggested a lot of food and places I should try.
English class was really awesome, as always…. Our teacher Mrs Anderson is so cool and she even gave me a college t-shirt from her son‘s college Texas Tec. Our school has a special day once a week, where instead of the dresscode, we can wear college and school shirts. Since she had known that I didn‘t have one yet, she gave me one that she didn‘t need 🙂
The last lesson was stats, where we talked about the reason why statistics are important and how to handle the data. For a math class, stats really amazing. But I have to give the credit to the teacher, who is making it super fun.
After school, I took the bus back home. For a while I then played with Lady Bug (the dog) and afterwards I talked about an hour with my host dad about the American school system. The good thing is, Mexico seems to be closer to Europe than America in a lot of ways. So we both agreed that the American schools are the weird but fun ones. A little later we headed to the school to pick my host siblings up from band practise. The band was playing in the stadium, so my host dad and I went 15 minutes earlier to watch them a little. The band was impressive, but I prefered the color gards with their flags. They are extremely impressive! When the practise was over, Jacob introduced me to a bunch of seniors, which were all pretty nice. I really wanna get to know as many people as possible in this school year!
Afterwards we drove home, had dinner and watched some friends. Luckly I didn‘t have any homework. Or at least not that I would know……
Today I slept in because I had been really tired the day before. After getting up, I started to fill out some papers I need for school. A few hours later we went to a Vietnamese restaurant to have lunch with some relatives. They were all really nice. Well, I guess…. I don‘t understand any Spanish. I had yellow curry, which was delicious. But the protion was so big, that I took the rest of it home to reheat it some other time. The drinks there were really good as well.
This is a cold coconut tea, which tastes awesome! But as you can see, the glass is filled with ice, so there wasn‘t much of the drink left. And since it wasn‘t a refill, I think this is a rip-off!
After returning home, we watched some TV and decorated my room a bit. A few hours later we were already sitting in the car, heading to Dallas, where a rodeo was going to take place. The trip to the rodeo was organized by Karen, who works for EF and is also a teacher at our school. She is responsible for us exchange students.
Soon after arriving at the rodeo, we met the other exchange students. All of them came, except the Italian girl, who instisted that she had to study the whole weekend. For me that‘s crazy, because we have the same class and it‘s not that much that it would take up the whole weekend.
When we got into the building, we first got some snacks and then went to pet the animals.
The calves were so cute! Every time the cowboys would have to try to lasso them, Ximena and I were rooting for the calves to not get caught!
Afterwards I took some pictures with the other exchange students down in the arena. And we also took some pictures where one of us is holing a sign with the school motto „AMOH“ on it. The reason why we did that, is that if we post this picture on Twitter, our whole grade gets points in this game that our principal set up. We have to spread AHMO to the world and take pictures at different places with the motto and post it. The farther away from the school it is, the more points your grade gets. At the moment my grade, the juniors, are in the lead. And today we got even more points for he juniors 😉
At 7:30 pm, the rodeo actually started. The first part was with horses. They put some itchy belt around the horses hips, so it would buckle and try to get it off. They were surprisingly wild, but most of the cowboys didn‘t fall off until the time was over.
This is one of the photos I took. I just think it‘s timed perfectely XD.
After the riding, they had calves coming out that the cowboys had to lasso and then bind their legs together. I know it didn‘t hurt the animals too much but it just broke my heart how they would tackle those adorable calves 🙁
The most beautiful thing was to see the calves, after being freed, trotting to the exit with their ears bouncing. It‘s kind of relieving to see that they were doing fine and in addition it was the cutest thing ever!
In the end, they did the rodeo with bulls. And oh my…… they were wild. Sometimes after buckling the cowboy off, they chased the other people in the ring that should lead them to the exit. The cowboys got thrown off very quickly and in a huuuuuge bow.
To end the rodeo, they had kids from the audience that would ride a rodeo on sheep. It was so adorable and most of them fell off without the sheep even running. But the crowd loved it and I have to agree that it was adorable.
After the rodeo we went on our way home. Since we all haven‘t had dinner, we stopped at sonic and got a milkshake instead. And just like last time, I couldn‘t finish it, so it will be my breakfast tomorrow 😉
Of course the whole day, I also texted back and forth with my 3 new friends from High School. Although it gets weird sometimes, since both of the guys keep hitting on me….. But I just ignore it and change the topic, haha.
Today when I woke up, both of my siblings were already at school for band rehersal, and my host mom was at work. So I got up at about 7:30am and got ready for school. The first thing that I found odd today, was that when I entered the kitchen to get a glass of water, my host mom apparently had lain a frozen burger on the table and wrote a note that said it was my breakfast. Eating something like a burger for breakfast is an absolute no go. So I put it back into the freezer and headed to the bus stop. When I arrived at Wylie High (20 minutes early), I got a text from a guy called Jacob that I had met yesterday during lunch. He asked if I was already at school, so I told him my location and we met before in front of the lockers. He introduced me to some other seniors and we just hung out until the bell rang for the first time.
Then I had AP Human Geo, which was quite okay. I still don‘t know any of the students in this class, but it doesn‘t really bother me because none of them looks like they could be nice. But there is one funny incident I have to tell you! The teacher wanted to check, how much geography we already knew, so he had an online quiz for us to test our world geo skills. Most questions were way too easy like „What is the biggest continent?“. And then there was the question; „What sea is located between Europe and Africa?“ After everybody finished the quiz, the teacher looked at the online results. And it turned out that only 42% of the kids in the class knew the correct answer! The worst part….. it was a multiple choice test!!!!!!
Second period was French. And I swear, I haven‘t heard a single French word in the entire class. And I was quite glad about it, since the French teacher has a horrible accent. But French class is really chill, we always have a good time.
Third period was the worst! It was AP US History. The teacher that I already didn‘t like yesterday became worse today! He started a PP presentation and went from historical topic to historical topic. He started with the native Americans and ended with European agriculture. It was so confusing because he told us about so mant topics that could fill a whole lesson, and he just read the title, said two sentences and moved on. There were so many topics but in the end of class, the students new nothing about any of these things. He just goes way too fast. For example, he spoke about reformation (for about 20 seconds) and told about Luther and 95 thesis without saying what the thesies were about…… Honestly, I‘m thinking of dropping that class. I‘ll go to the couselors office on Monday and ask if there is another history lesson I can take during that period. If there isn‘t another one during this time, I won‘t drop because I don‘t want to change any of the other classes.
Then, when we were supposed to have debate, we went to eat lunch with Mr Montgomery, our principal. It was really nice and he even said that he had visited Switzerland before. When we were done eating, we headed back to school and there was still a half hour of lunch break left. Since the cafeteria was too crowded, I went into the debate classroom where I knew almost everyone already. And they are all super nice, so that‘s like winning the lottery.
My lunch 🙂This is what the cafeteria during lunch break looks like. So I rather went to my debate classroom.
After lunch I had AP Environmental Science and we made a few simulations about environmental exploitation. Then we wrote our results down and the lesson was almost over. One of the girls I‘ve met in this class, Marissa, even wanted to hold Fang the tarantula 😉
Next period was English. I really like the teacher. Mrs Anderson is so nice, and she said that she won‘t forget that I‘m not a native speaker, which makes me feel relieved.
Last period was statistics. The guy from earlier, Jacob, even sat with me through the whole class, although he wouldn‘t have had to be at school at all, since his class was cancelled. He just asked me via SnapChat where my last class was and then asked the teacher if he could stay for the lesson too haha XD. The lesson was about a woman that seems to be able to smell Parkinson. Apparently she had to find out which 6 of 12 people had Parkinson and she actually got 11 out of 12 correct. We made statistics on how big the possibility is, that the experiment really means she can smell it. Maybe she just had a lucky guess? The class was actually really cool. Mr BT, our stats teacher makes it really fun and interesting. In addition my friend Jacob (maybe because he‘s a year older) knew all the right answers and participated more in the class than the students acutally taking the class… If I ever struggle in math, he‘ll have to tutor me!
After the last period I got on the bus and when I was home, my host mom had already been waiting. She asked me if I wanted to go to the city with her to get some decoration for my room. So we went to a local store and bought a board to hang on the wall, where I could pin up some pictures. Afterwards I thought we were going to pick up Ximena and Luis from band rehersal, but there was a band event that me and my host mom went to. She promised it would only take 20 minutes. In the end it was 1.5 hours and everybody was tired and didn‘t want to be there. We were all starving, so we decided to grab some dinner at „Chili‘s“ which is btw not a nice place. We went with the Landrum family, so Adrianna (my host moms best friend), Alex (former debater) , Nathan (from my debate class), and for the first time Adriannas husband.
The lemonade was horrible, it tasted like plastic. But at least tacos were good. Anyway, the whole day made me really tired, so I‘ll go to bed now……
Today was one of the most important days of my whole exchange. I got up at 7 am, which is late for a school day, but since school only starts at nine, there is enough time. Last night I didn‘t sleep very well. So this morning I wasn‘t very tired and had a lot of motivation to get up in the morning. So I got ready and left the house at about 8:15 am. We walked to the corner, where the bus would pick us up. It was really hot outside, considering that it was only morning. We were standing there for a while, until the yellow bus finally arrived. We got in and I sat next to my host sister. I know it‘s weird to make such a big deal of a bus, but it‘s something you always see in movies and never imagine really sitting in one. The bus arrived about 15 minutes later at the school. So I went inside of the building with my host siblings and eventually we had to split up and go to our classes. The hallway was really crowded and it was loud; just like on TV.
My first period was AP Human Geography. My teacher, Coach Nicoletti, seemed quite nice, but the kids in the class were kind of weird. I found out that most of them were Sophomores, which means they are more than a year younger than me. The coach introduced himself and told what we should be expecting of his class. He said we would go way beyond maps. We would learn about many other ways to use geography and we would try to apply it as much as possible. As I said, I didn‘t really socialize with anyone in that class, which was kind of a bad start. I was just hoping it wouldn‘t be like that all day long.
Second period was French. And oh my…. I have a lot to tell about that class! The teacher, Mrs Shelton, is really nice and we had a great time. The problem is just, that although it was French IV (highest French class), 90% of the time, everybody spoke English. Even the exercises that we should do, like looking up the history of a certain flag, Mrs Shelton told us to do it in English. So at least half of the lesson had zero French involved. Then she said, she would do a PP presentation to introduce herself in French and we should take notes. That was the first time I‘d heard her speaking French. She seemed fluent but the accent…….oh god the accent! She‘s a native Texan, so everytime a word ended with an „é“, she pronounced it like „ey“. It was truly painful to listen, but she is a really nice lady, so I feel bad about saying this stuff. But there was another thing in class that I noticed and I can‘t even think about it without chuckling. There were students that mixed up South America with South Africa, asked where Belgium was located and thought the French flag was Dutch! All of these students said things like that out loud without feeling ashamed or at least realizing how stupid that was. This class was really nice, but I just can‘t make a streight face when something like that happens 😉 Nevertheless, I liked the students and especially the girl next to me. She said her parents were from Quebec and until she was eight, her parents partly communicated with her in French. But she told me that she had forgotten almost everything and that with this class, she wanted to learn her parents language a bit better.
Third period was AP US History. The teacher was Mr Beery, who claimed that his name originated from Switzerland and it was Bieri before they „americanized“ it. In the beginning we all had to introduce ourselves by saying your name and a fun fact. In the same class was Diletta, an Italian exchange student. So when it was her turn to introduce herself, she said that she was an exchange student from Italy and the whole class went like „WOOOW“. So when it was my turn and I said that I was from Switzerland, the whole class repeated the „WOOOOOOOOOOH“, and it sounded a lot more impressed haha XD. I kind of felt bad for her because it was so obvious… But the class turned out to be not as fun as I had expected. The teacher announced a quiz (test) for Monday already. That‘s not really a good start….
The fourth period was finally debate. I had already known the teacher, Mr H., which made it a lot more comfortable. And with me in the same class was Nathan, who I already knew. He belongs to the Landrum family, which is inseparable with my host family, so I had met him a dozen times before. But right after the class had started, Mr Montgomery (the principal) made an announcement that all exchange students may leave class and gather in his office. So I went to the office as quickly as possible. We all sat around a table and Mr Montgomery welcomed us again to the school, asked us about our experiences so far and invited us to have lunch with him tomorrow. So tomorrow during fourth period and lunch break, Mr Montgomery will take us to a restaurant! Then he gave us paper to fill out so he could order the Letter Jackets for us. If you don‘t know what Letter Jackets are, google it. They are really cool and come in different designs, but usually they need to be earned with good grades and a certain amount of classes taken. But because we are exchange students, the school will just give us a jacket for free! So when this „meeting“ was over, I went back to debate class. It wasn‘t much time left, so the bell rang after a few minutes.
As always, Mr Montgomery insisted of taking a photo of all the exchange students. From left to right: Konstantin (Germany), Carlos (Spain), me, Sophie (Germany), Diletta (Italy).
Some students said they would go across the street to the shops to buy some lunch, but I had a sandwich with me, that my host mom had made for me. Others went to the cafeteria, but I didn‘t know where to go. But luckly Nathan said that he would eat in the classroom and a lot of other students did the same thing. So I unpacked my lunch and started eating. Once Nathan went out of the classroom to get chicken popcorn or something like that, I socialized with the other debaters. They were really nice and seemed excited when they found out that I was an exchange student. Everybody asked where I was from and they all said that they either were in Switzerland already or that they would like to visit the country. That kind of surprised me, since I had expected them to not even know where it‘s located. The students from debate are definitely my favorites, which is ideal, since that‘s the class I would spend a lot more time with (sometimes weekends because of tournaments).
After lunch I had AP Environmental Science. In the classroom they have a tarantula and a snake. The teacher, Mrs Hoover, immendiately told us that the snake was called Sugarcup and the tarantula‘s name was Fang. I sat next to a girl named Christine, who was really nice. In the beginning, we took an online test to calculate our environmental footprint. The problem was, that my Chromebook (yes, we actually have to work with this crap) wasn‘t working. It did work in the end though.
Sixth period was AP English. Our teacher Mrs Anderson is really cool. She was the one that had convinced me earlier to take AP instead of the usual English class. She was hilarious, making a lot of jokes and even asked us wether we think Trump‘s hair is fake or real. She told us a lot about what we are going to do in this year and what we should expect. So far, I think that English is my favorite subject after debate.
The last period was statistics, which I was very worried about. But the teacher, we just call him Mr BT, was really chill. He said that he struggled a lot with math when he was our age and that he would try to not give us a lot of homework. And the thing that made him really popular among the students, was that he said he wouldn‘t enforce the smartphone policy. The policy says that when caught with a phone during class, the phone would be taken away for the day and the students would be charged 15 dollars. Now Mr BT said if you use your phone during class, he would just take the phone and put it on his desk and at the end of the lesson give it back. So he seems like a really good guy. I didn‘t really meet anyone in this class, but I‘m glad I found nice students in some other subjects.
After the last bell rang, we all went to the places where the buses were. I saw my host siblings again when looking for the bus. We had to wait in the sun for a quite long time but then we finally found it and went home.
Fun facts about High School:
It‘s really crowded in the hallways and everybody is stressed, since every time they‘re late (also just a few seconds), their parents get a message.
The school bell is the sound of a ship, floating on the ocean, since our school mascot is a pirate.
Our principal interrupts classes about 20 times per day with his announcements. Some of them are just a reminder that you should be proud of the school and its spirit.
In the hallway, there are cops that ask you where you are going when you‘re in the hallway during class.
There are 8 stairs that go from the second to the third floor, but only 2 stairs leading to the first floor.
There is a very strict dress code, but everyone keeps breaking it.
Other than the exchange students, there are a lot of immigrants going to this school that speak with an accent.
All black girls wear their hair in braids.
A lot of muslim girls cover their hair or even wear traditional muslim clothing.
Besides the pledge of allegiance, there is another pledge for Texas. And they do the pledge every day in second period, standing, hand on your heart, and directed towards the Texan flag.
So all in all I‘d say it was a good first school day. And I think I made at least 3 friends. Michelle and Justin from the debate team and Jakob, who for whatever reason suddenly showed up in the debate room during lunch. I met a lot of other kids that were nice, but the reason I consider the three of them friends, is because they asked for my phone number/snap code. So with them I‘ve been texting back and forth since lunch. In fact, they are texting me right now….
Today I had lunch with the Landrum family, the same family friends as yesterday. They are really nice and they always come up with new ideas of places where they could take me. So today we ate at a really cool burger restaurant called „Liberty Burger“. The food was so gooooood! Talked had really long conversations and all in all we spent about 3 hours in that restaurant.
When they dropped me off at my house, it wasn‘t too long until my host mom came home from work. She looked really exhausted, apparently the kids keep her on the go! At about 5 pm we left the house for the birthday dinner of my host moms twin aunts. Some of the relatives, that were present, didn‘t speak any English, so Ximena and Luis constantly had to translate back and forth. Mexican people seem to be very embracing and welcoming. When meeting them, they directly hug you and Perlas mother called me her temporary granddaughter <3
The food was quite good but I was still full from lunch. But thank god it was a buffet, so I just went with some salad and a bit of chicken. To my surprise, the get-together was over very quickly. At 6:30 pm we were already back in the car on our way home. Since it was this early, I asked my host mom to stop at a store, so I could buy a school planner to note assignments and homework. The first store didn‘t have one but as I have learnt here so far, is that if you don‘t find what you with for in one store, you just go to the next. In Target we finally found what I had been looking for.
Back home we watched a couple of episodes of „Friends“ and then I started packing everything I need for school. After taking a shower I went to the backyard and sat on the couche, reading a few more pages of this book I have to read for English class.
After sunset it is really nice to sit outside. It‘s warm and the couch is extremely comfortable!
Tomorrow will be the first day of High School. I‘m really excited and actually not too freaked out. The good thing is, that my host siblings don‘t have early band practice, which means that they‘ll be riding the bus with me!
Today my host mom had to work the whole day. So when I got up, she was at work. My siblings were at High School for band rehersal and my host dad was still on his business trip. So I had the whole house for myself. After getting up I got some fruit from the fridge and ate it while watching TV. Then at 1 pm, Alex, whose family is really close to my host family, picked me up to go to Wylie High so I could meet the debate teacher. Alex himself used to be on the debate team until graduating last year and now he‘s really good friends with the debate teacher. But when we arrived at the debate classroom, we had to wait for the teacher for almost an hour. Apparently there was an emergancy teachers meeting. While waiting, Alex showed me the classroom and showed me all the trophies, that the debate team had won, (some of them were his). The classroom was decorated like crazy……
Then the teacher finally made his appearance. He introduced himself as Mr H. When I told him that I‘m from Switzerland, he immediately told me that his last name, which is Hiltbrunner, was a Swiss name. He also metioned to have visited Geneva a few years ago. We continued takling for a while. He told me all about the different sections of his debate class and that there were many tournaments on the weekends. He went on, telling me that the next tournament was on September 7th and that I probably wouldn‘t feel ready to participate in that, but could still come with them and watch some of his students debate. I immediately agreed. He then said that on September 28th there was a tournament at Wylie High and that would be a great opportunity to take part for the first time.
Afterwards Alex and him started talking for a looooong time and later in the car Alex told me that Mr H. was kind of extended family for him. Mr H. was actually really cool and all the students love him. Some say he‘s more of a weird uncle then your teacher XD.
We headed back at about 3:30 pm to Alexes house to pick up his mom, who is like a sister to my host mom. Apparently they have known each other for a really long time and their kids practically grew up together.
So after picking her up, the three of us had lunch at a place called „Firehouse“, which is a restaurant specializing in sandwiches.
I picked the sandwich with Swiss cheese on it. It wasn‘t as good as the real Emmentaler but it wasn‘t bad either. Anyway, the sandwich was realllllly good!
After eating we headed to the High School to pick up my host siblings from band rehersal. So Adriana (Alexes mom) drove us home and watched TV until my host mom came back home.
Tuesday is Taco Tuesday in this house, so obviously for dinner we had the most amazing homemade Tacos ever!
Today the school schedules were out. So on the Wylie High homepage every student could see what teachers they have and in what classroom they‘ll be taught. Since the break between the periods are only five minutes and the school is really big, you need to know how to get to your next class as fast as possible. So it‘s quite common for freshmen and new students to visit the school before summer break is over and walk to all of the classrooms. Because Ximena is a freshman and I‘m new too, we went to the school today. There I also met the two exchange students I hadn‘t met before. One of them from Germany and the other one from Spain. They are both a lot younger than me, or at least that‘s what I think judging by their apprearance. The German was really quiet but I liked the Spanish boy better since he was a lot more talkative and went for a hug instead of a handshake. My host parents constantly try to convince me to spend time with the other exchange students but in my point of view that‘s not really a good idea. Although it‘s nice to know them a little, I want to make friends with real Americans from whom I can actually learn English.
After leaving school, we went to eat lunch at an Asian restaurant. The food was quite good, but I still prefer sandwiches, burgers and fries 😉
Back home we watched a few episodes of family guy and then said goodbye to my host father, who‘s going on a business trip until next Saturday. Since my host mom works at a elementery school since last Friday, me and my host siblings were home alone. After my host mom came back home, we drove to the High School once again because Luis and Ximena had band rehersal. So as soon as my host mom and I dropped them off at school, we went to a nail salon. I had never been to one before and so far I think this was the oddest thing in Texas XD. I‘m just not used to Asian people filing my nails and oiling my arm…
They had so many colors that I was completely lost. Thank god my host mom helped me pick out a color. Since I don‘t like too bold colors I went with a very modest shade of pink.
It was a nice experience though, because this way me and my host mom could spend some bonding time together. After the nail salon we went to Walmart to get some things we needed.
This is what the bread section looks like. All of the bread has the consistency of toast. You can literally push the bread together and it will fill with air again. This is the only type of bread they have…..
Today was more of a lazy day…. again 😉 For lunch we went to a fast food restarant called cane‘s and btw, they have amazing limonade.
Fun fact: The restaurants slogan is „Hey hey hey, chicken today?“
Afterwards we went shopping for cloths because the school has an insanely strict dresscode. And as I found out, the school gives the students an opportunity to pay, so that the next day of school they don‘t have to follow the dresscode. For me that sounds like a complete rip-off!
What is really weird for me though is that all the shops are open on weekends. But I‘m kind of getting used to it and it‘s really great to be able to shop on sundays!
At home we did the usual; watching „Friends“. Which is slowly becoming my favorite sitcom 🙂 It‘s really awesome because with „Friends“ we have a show that we can watch with the whole family and everyone seems to be enjoying it. But earlier today my siblings had started watching a really weird show that‘s not quite my taste. So while they were watching the show, I sat on the couch next to them and read the first 100 pages of this book I have to read for my AP English class. The book is written really well, but it really bothers me that it is so long. So even after spending a lot of time reading this book, it feels like I‘m not getting anywhere…..
For dinner we went to „Sonic“, which is a place where you can order your food in the parking lot and then they bring the order to your car. But we didn‘t actually go for the food since we were all still full from lunch. The reason why we went there is because my host sister told me that they had amazing shakes. She recommended me the oreo-chocolate shake, so obviously I followed her advice. And because everyone was still getting a small portion of food, I decided to try a corn dog.
This is what their parking lot looks like. The corn dog was not really good. I decided to try it without even knowing what it is but at least I know not what not to get next time. I think I‘ll just stick with the normal hot dog….This is the oreo-chocolate shake. And yes, this is what Texans call the small size…. It really is as sugary as it looks like and after drinking half of it, I felt sick. So I put it in the fridge so I can finish it tomorrow.
